Pen and Ink

In preparation for future paintings, Sutz often sketches out his subject in pen and ink to esablish a pattern for design. Each sketch is completed in a matter of minutes, "from life"; and Sutz writes: "The sketches are my favorites. They seem to capture an emotion and spontenaiety that I find extremely difficult to duplicate in a finished painting."

When commuting by train during his years in Chicago, Sutz took to sketching his fellow passengers. Over a period of 20 years, he has accumulated over 4,000 sketches.
